On Sunday, December 13, 2009 at 5:00 a.m., 20,609 runners lined up at Ala Moana Park for the 37th annual Honolulu Marathon. Out of the 20,609 runners, 20,321 runners finished the race at Kapiolani Park. The winner, for the second year in a row was Patrick Ivuti from Kenya with a time of 2 hours and 12 minutes. The women’s winner was Svetlana Zakharova from Russia with a time of 2 hours and 28 minutes. The Hawaii (local) winner was Brandon Laan with a time of 2 hours and 25 minutes. Over half of the entrants traveled from Japan to participate in the race. Some of our very own students and staff at Academia Language School participated in this year’s race. We’d like to like to congratulate everyone who participated in and finished the race. We’d also like to thank all of our students who volunteered at the Honolulu Marathon as greeters and helpers.

Surf’s up! We are in the middle of the season for some of the biggest surf on the North Shore, with waves reaching heights of 25 to 30 feet! The conditions are extremely dangerous, and only experts can surf the giant waves. Tourists and locals from all around gather at local spots on O’ahu’s North Shore from November to late December to check out the world-famous surf competitions.
This past Monday ended the Reef Hawaiian Pro, the first of three contests making up the Van’s Triple Crown of Surfing. The Reef Hawaiian Pro at Ali’i Beach Park in Hale’iwa was a huge success, with crowds of people showing up to watch some of the world’s best surfers in action. There are still two more contests to go in the Van’s Triple Crown of Surfing: the O'Neill World Cup at Sunset Beach (November 24 - December 6), and the Billabong Pipeline Masters at Ehukai Beach (December 8-20). If you have not had a chance to visit the North side of the island, make sure you check it out and catch sights of some of the world’s largest waves. You can also watch the competitions live at www.triplecrownofsurfing.com/reefblog/live.php.

Halloween is an American holiday celebrated every year on October 31st. In Hawaii, it is a fun, unforgettable event for everyone, young and old. Every year thousands of people crowd the streets of Waikiki and Downtown to show off their craziest, scariest costumes. Hundreds more show up just to witness the creativity of people’s costumes.
This year, Bill Young of Academia Language School organized his annual pre-Halloween Party at Cha Cha Cha. About 24 students attended the event, where they had drinks and pupus before heading off to crowded streets in Waikiki. For many students, this was their first time in Hawaii for a Halloween celebration. Check out photos of the event at www.academiaschool.com/zenphoto/halloween-2009. If you missed this year’s Halloween festivities, we hope to see you next year for another scary Halloween!

Friday, August 28th from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., Academia Language School's teachers and students will be at Ala Moana Beach Park for their annual picnic. Last year there were over a hundred students and staff members enjoying good food, live music, and fun games near the water's edge at Ala Moana beach. This is a great way for old and new students to meet one another and make new friendships.
Many friendships made at Academia Language School last a lifetime. Students often stay in contact and continue their friendships long after returning to their home countries. The local experiences and friendships made from Academia School are important aspects to our educational environment. Academia School hopes each student will experience a well-rounded education during their stay in Hawaii. Our annual picnics are just one way Academia Language School tries to foster these relationships. The beautiful setting, interactive games, live music, and great food provide a unique "classroom". It is a way for students to practice their English outside of a traditional classroom and use what they've learned in a social, real-life setting. Preparations are underway! We are looking forward to another beautiful day under the sunny, blue skies of Hawaii. Get ready for Food, Fun, Festivities, and Friendships! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Hawaii’s premier surfing event, The Van’s Triple Crown, started this weekend on Oahu’s North shore. The event brings the best surfers in the world to Hawaii for six weeks of competition. This week, the festivities began at Haleiwa where the waves were almost 10 foot Hawaiian. The event changes beaches each week. The Triple Crown will travel to Pipeline, Sunset Beach and other famous surfing beaches. Here is some early video from the event. See Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2iN1A26-vYA Academia students love this time of year. Many of our students are surfers or surfing fans and enjoy attending all the world-class surfing events on Oahu. This year is no different as we have students and groups going up to the North shore to attend the Triple Crown. ![]() Did you know Hawaiian's measure waves differently than in other countries. The "Hawaiian Method" measures the height of the wave from the back.. People in California or Australia measure the height of the wave from the front or "face". The "Hawaiian Method" underestimates the height of a wave rather than overestimating. For example, in California a surfer may say he rode a 20 foot wave, but in Hawaii that wave would only be 10 feet! ![]() ![]()
