2009 Annual Picnic Announcement
Friday, August 28th from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., Academia Language School's teachers and students will be at Ala Moana Beach Park for their annual picnic. Last year there were over a hundred students and staff members enjoying good food, live music, and fun games near the water's edge at Ala Moana beach. This is a great way for old and new students to meet one another and make new friendships.

Many friendships made at Academia Language School last a lifetime. Students often stay in contact and continue their friendships long after returning to their home countries. The local experiences and friendships made from Academia School are important aspects to our educational environment. Academia School hopes each student will experience a well-rounded education during their stay in Hawaii.

Our annual picnics are just one way Academia Language School tries to foster these relationships. The beautiful setting, interactive games, live music, and great food provide a unique "classroom". It is a way for students to practice their English outside of a traditional classroom and use what they've learned in a social, real-life setting.

Preparations are underway! We are looking forward to another beautiful day under the sunny, blue skies of Hawaii. Get ready for Food, Fun, Festivities, and Friendships!

Koko Head Crater Hike
On July 31st, Academia Language School hosted a hike up Koko Head Crater. This is a hike that goes straight up the side of the crater. It is 1,208 feet up to the top of the crater rim.

So how do you get up the side of a steep volcano? By hiking up more than 1,100 steps of course.

That's right! This hike features over 1,100 steps that go straight up the side of the crater. The hike isn't difficult in the sense that you can get lost, because you can't. The hike goes straight up and straight down. It is difficult in the sense that it is very tiring and at some points steep.

The reward for your efforts is the great views you get during the hike. While climbing up the crater, you get a panoramic view of the south-east shore of Honolulu. Most notably, Hanauma Bay, a national marine sanctuary that is famous for its great diving and multitude of fish. The high up you get on the crater, the better the views become. With 1,100 steps in between you and your goal of the summit, you're sure to have many opportunities to take beautiful pictures while you rest your tired legs. If you're looking for a good workout with great views and good friends, join us on our next hike up Koko Head Crater.

Note: Prior to hiking up Koko Head Crater, the students hiked down the cliffs near the opening of Hanauma Bay. At the bottom of the cliff, the ledge drops off vertically into the ocean. These ledges are the favorite spots for Hawaii's fishermen looking to catch that trophy fish. This hike should not be attempted without the supervision of an experienced person. It should definitely not be attempted during bad weather and rough seas.
